Fizzy Moon Sand

Thanks to MNS EarlyON for the activity. Today we were to make moon sand with a twist. I didn’t have the ingredients to make moon sand but already had some saved from a while back when we made some. I let Derek explore the moon sand an added so seashells for him to play with. After he played with it for a while I had him help me get the moon sand ready for the next part. To make the moon sand fizzy you add a little bit of baking soda and pour some vinegar over it. I had Derek help scoop some moon sand and baking soda mixture into an ice cube tray and hide little seashells inside. I put it into the freezer for about an hour so they would firm up. we took them outside and Derek squirted vinegar on top. We were supposed to dump them out of the ice cube tray and have little cubes to pour vinegar over but they didn’t firm up very well. (Not sure if I took them out too soon or if they ever would have firmed up) we noticed that the vinegar poured over made bubbles. Then Derek did dump the tray over and it was a mess. He touched and played with it for a minute to find the shells but he didn’t like being messy and wanted to get cleaned up. This was a different way to play with moon sand and also do the baking soda and Vinegar experiment. Next time if we do something like this again I would add a little more banking soda and not put them into an ice cube tray. This was a very messy sensory experience for Derek that he wasn’t overly thrilled with. Playing with straight moon sand at the begging was much more Derek’s comfort.
