Milk Rainbow

Derek helped me pour milk into three pie tins and add a few drops of food colouring to each. You could only use one tin or any shallow dish you have and as little or as much food colouring as you want. You only need a little bit of milk to cover the bottom of the dish. We then took a q-tip and dipped it in soap and dipped it into the food coloured milk. When the soap covered q-tip touched the milk the colours moved away to the edges and created a cool effect. There science behind why this happens but I honestly didn’t look it up and Derek wouldn’t understand fully anyway. If you have older children I would definitely look up the science behind this experiment (Surface Tension) and explain it to them. We had fun looking at what happens to the colours when we touched it with soap. Derek was able to see that the colours moved away. After he wanted to dump the remaining soap into the milk and mix it around till the colours all blended together. This didn’t last very long but it was a neat experiment none the less.
