Matching Shapes w/Objects
Matching shapes in real life. I had made the outline of a few shapes on the floor in painters tape and then gathered some of Derek’s play food. The intention of the activity is to match the play food by shape to the shapes on the floor. He mixed up the square and rectangles a few times as well as circle and oval but for the most part he did really well with this activity. Also the moon or crescent shape was new for him. I could have made other shapes on the floor but I went with the shapes that the food best matched. You don’t have to use play food like we did. You can use any objects you have around the house and match it to any shape you like. If your child isn’t ready to match real objects then you can always cut out shapes from paper and have them match those. This was a great gross motor way of learning shapes in real life. Derek then helped me pick the tape off the floor and throw it away. Afterwards Derek wanted to play with the toy food and pretend to cook.
